Obituary of Josephine "Joie" Nemia
Josephine (Joie) Nemia passed away on Tuesday April 25, 2023 at the age of 100. Joie lived a long healthy and wonderful life.
She was born October 22, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY, a place she considered “the greatest in the world”. She was one of 10 siblings who grew up during the Roaring 20’s and then The Great Depression. After World War II, she would marry her husband John Nemia and start their family together. She would become a mother to (4) children; Frankie, Johnny, Dolly and Connie. She loved her children unconditionally.
Eventually her children would marry and Joie would become a grandmother to 12 grandchildren. As the family grew and life moved along, Joie would eventually retire from her job in the NYC public schools and move to her apartment on Jerusalem Ave in Seaford, NY. Joie was a worker who would not remain retired for long, eventually taking a part-time job at the bakery in Waldbaum’s. She loved to work and it kept her young.
Joie was a devout Catholic, never missing a chance to go to church. She loved to attend Sunday Mass at Maria Regina, volunteered in the soup kitchen and spent a lot of time praying for her family and friends in need. If Joie was there, the Rosary was not far behind.
In the latter part of her life, she loved to got to “The Center”, which was The Farmingdale Adult Daycare. She loved to be around the people who volunteered and the friends she made there. It was a place that she enjoyed so much and kept her going. In light of this, the family asks that anyone who wants to donate to the FADC, please do so in Joie’s memory. Donations can be made using this link: http://www.
It was also important to Joie to send flowers when someone close to her had passed, so flowers sent in memory of her are appreciated by the family as well.
