Obituary of Mary P. Cerillo
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary P. Cerillo, 90, peacefully passed into Eternal Life on June 8, 2022, in Emerson, NJ.
Mary was born in Brooklyn to her late parents, Angelo and Grazia Occhino, who emigrated from Sicily.
She married the late Louis J. Cerillo after his Army service during the Korean War. She was a devoted
wife and enjoyed 29 years of marriage before his death when she was 49. Mary set a wonderful
example for her children being a woman of faith who hoped in the Lord and loved everyone.
She first worked in the garment industry and later for the City of NY. When she retired, Mary joined the
Italian American Club and volunteered with her local First Aid Squad’s Ladies Auxiliary.
Mary had a beautiful sense of style and enjoyed fashion, shopping and sewing. She had a good sense of
humor and delighted in having fun with her family and friends. She also relished cooking her Italian
specialties for them during the holidays.
She is survived by her loving children, Ginger (Barry) Maher and Louis (Pam) and adoring grandchildren
Joe, Katie (Joey), Nick, J.P. and Jack, all of whom she is very proud. She is also survived by her beloved
relatives including her brother Augustine (Rose Marie), brother-in-law Nick, and sisters-in-law Ida and Helen, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, especially Prudence, Sam and Diana.
Mary is predeceased by her beloved parents, husband Lou, sister Josephine, brother Anthony and in
childhood, brother Santo as well as many loving in-laws and her dear friend Chet.
In awe of how she shared with others, Mary’s family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made
to the Bread of Life and Crossroads food pantries. Donations may be made by check to St. John’s
Church, 213 West 30 th Street, New York, NY 10001, or online at christinthecity.nyc where there are
