Obituary of Thomas P. Hurley

Thomas P. Hurley, 72, of Seaford, NY died on Friday, April 10, 2020. Beloved husband of Susan L. (Di Troia) of 47 years. Devoted father of Melissa A. Vion and husband Christopher of Oakland, NJ. Proud grandfather of Alexandra, Madeline, and Tyler. Dearest brother of Michael Hurley, Virginia Koerner and the late James Hurley.
Thomas was preceded in his death by his parents, Michael and Catherine (Ward) Hurley.
Thomas was a US Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War. He served as an Aircraft Mechanic within Helicopter Support Squadron 1. During his tenure, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the 1st Good Conduct Award. He was honorably discharged in May of 1968.
After his time in the US Navy, Thomas became a decorated Port Authority Police Officer serving the community from 1972 through 1992. In March of 1988, he was awarded the Meritorious Police Duty Medal while assigned as the main house firefighter position on the 3x11 tour. This was one of many commendable service performances awarded to Thomas throughout his PAPD career. After 20 years of dedicated service, he retired out of the John F. Kennedy International Airport Command.
A hero in many ways, but most especially to those he is survived by, Thomas, most affectionately known as Poppa Bear, will be deeply missed by all.
Due to the current world health crisis, funeral services are private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
