I am very sorry to hear of Mr Manso's passing. I played in Seaford High Band from 1976 through 1979. Mr Manso inspired my love and appreciation of music. I have fond memories of the trips to NYC to see performances. I participated in band performance trips to New Orleans, Orlando and Antwerp, Belgium. All of these experiences were wonderful. Over the years I have continued my appreciation of music by seeing performances in London, Los Angeles, St Petersburg, Detroit, Denver and New York. I am blessed and honored to have known him.
“I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.” ‐‐ Leo Buscaglia, American author

Our family's (Coggins) best to the Manso family, with the passing of beloved "Mr. Manso." Five members of our family were in the Seaford HS band during his tenure (Nancy-clarinet, Susan-french horn, Carol-1st chair 1st, flute, and FIRST female drum major at Seaford HS band-selected by Mr. Manso; my brother Doug, and I played cornet.
The tradition continues. Brother Doug's daughter-Alison Coggins- is the current drum major with Seaford HS marching band.
Funny story: fall 1977. We were practicing "Sleigh Ride" for the Christmas concert. I surprised the HELL out of the band when it came to the "horse whip" (rim shot) part. I brought in a 22 caliber starting pistol (blanks), and pulled the trigger at the appropriate time in the song. He stopped the band and looked at me and laughed... hard. He gave me the "go ahead" to do it at the actual concert. Times have changed. There's no way a school would allow that to occur these days. Too bad. We all had fun with it, and he was great with allowing it.
He was a great teacher, with great passion for music. He made "band class" enjoyable-as the above story demonstrates..
I'll play the "circle of scales" for him on my dusty cornet (or at least try to-it's been 30+ years).
We are diminished with his passing.

I am truly sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Manso. I know he was an important figure in so many lives; especially his loving family and family friends. I was part of the Seaford High School band family. Teachers make an impact in many students lives but Mr. Manso was the teacher that made the biggest impact for me. He taught us more than music and gave me a stronger sense of self worth and confidence. So many times over the years I have thought that I would have ended up somewhat differently if it were not for the experience I had being part of Joe Manso's band. I will always remember him gratefully and fondly. I wish peace for his family so that they may get through this difficult time. I'm sure he's leading a band of Angels in Heaven.

Papa Joe, as he will always be fondly remembered, by so many who has the fortunate luck of having him as a mentor , a teacher, and a friend at Seaford High , was a class Act.. But he was more than that ,, he taught me the love of music, the appreciation of the Art, something that I still use today and instill into others.. But it was not just him, it was your whole family.. He is up there , entertaining others, and may he rest at the right hand of the father.. RIP Papa Joe

My sincere condolences to the Manso family...Mr. Manso was a gem of a man - equal doses of perfectionism combined with tremendous compassion...I think of him every Holiday Season when I hear that certain version of 'Sleigh Ride' on the radio - telling everyone in earshot how we played this exact arrangement every year in band - and then happily hum (or whistle) along - but only those parts of the song that I played on my tenor sax all those years...rest in peace and celebrate a life well lived!
