To say Phil would be surprised to hear anyone refer to him as a hero, would be an
understatement. But he was a hero of sorts. He unknowingly served as an example of how to
go on living and genuinely find joy, even when tragedy befalls you. After losing two children and
his wife of 69 years, he showed all of us how to take the limited time we are given on this Earth
and live each day with decency and gratitude. He recognized that life is a gift from God and
while unbearable personal loss struck too many times to count, Phil managed to smile, laugh,
and revel in others’ milestones and accomplishments.

He was a favorite in the eyes of his grandchildren and his nieces and nephews. They all claim he
made them feel like they were the most important person in the room. His wisdom and life
experience helped them navigate through difficult times. They always left Merrick feeling
uplifted, hopeful, happy.

Phil was a sought-after draftsman and worked on NYC structures until he was 85 years old. He’s
responsible for much of the iron work at the Guggenheim and Natural History Museums. He
even contributed his architectural expertise to the original World Trade Center towers.
Phil didn’t wear a pinstripe uniform, but there never lived a more loyal Yankees fan. One of his
favorite players, Captain Derek Jeter, once said, “Your image isn’t your character. Character is
what you are as a person.” Phil Bellamore lived and died displaying bravery, integrity, and
humility. Sleep well until we meet again.
