Obituary of Josephine La Scala
Josephine LaScala, affectionately known to many as Jo, graced this world on July 3, 1939, in the vibrant heart of Bronx, New York. She completed her journey through life on December 4, 2024, surrounded by her family in the cozy suburb of Baytown, Texas, at the age of 85. Jo's departure leaves a reflection of warmth, stories, and endless love.
Jo carved out a life rich with love, laughter, and accomplishment. Her journey led her to SUNY Oneonta University, a place where she blossomed into the kind and knowledgeable educator that so many young minds in the Massapequa School District were fortunate to encounter for over two decades. As an elementary school teacher, she was more than an educator; she was a guide, touching the lives of her students with lessons of compassion and curiosity which resonated well beyond the classroom doors.
Jo found love and companionship with her late husband, Stephen, they shared a dynamic and spirited life together full of laughter, adventure and dancing. Although Stephen's passing left a void, Jo filled it with unforgettable memories from their travels, both across the United States and abroad, collecting tales and friends wherever their journey took them.
Her faith was demonstrated in the community she loved, devoting time at the church kitchen and offering a helping hand with the Friendship Connection Organization. Her devotion and care were felt by many who had the privilege to work alongside her.
Family was the anchor of Jo’s life, evident in the boys she adopted and raised as her own. She took immense pride in her role as a mother, not to forget the joy she radiated as a grandmother to the lively Isabella, ensuring her legacy continues to thrive in their hearts and futures.
Though preceded in death by her parents, Adele and Thomas Costa, as well as her dear husband Stephen, Josephine leaves behind a tapestry of love and memories. Her children, Dominick and Matthew, her daughter-in-law Ethel Rose, her sister, Adele, her brother-in-law Stu, and her nephews Robert and Thomas continue to celebrate her life’s impact.
Her favorite saying, “Whatever, Whatever,” captures her approach to life and will remain a comforting memory for all of us reflecting her resilience, humor, and enduring love. We cherish the moments we shared with Jo, and the light she brought to our lives shines brightly in our memories.
Jo leaves behind a legacy of endless devotion to family, strangers turned friends, and the pursuit of knowledge. She remains a beacon of warmth and comfort in the lives of all touched by her generous spirit. Let us cherish those memories and keep them alive as we say a heartfelt goodbye to a wonderful woman.
