Obituary of Richard Shapland
In Loving Memory of Richard Shapland
Richard Shapland, affectionately known as Uncle Ricky, left this world on January 18, 2024, in his hometown of Massapequa, NY. Born on June 11, 1953, to Robert and Roselle Shapland, Richard was a beacon of strength, perseverance, and joy throughout his 70 years.
Richard's early life in Massapequa formed the bedrock of a man deeply connected to his roots and community. Overcoming the challenge of blindness at the age of 13, he lived a rich and fulfilling life. After graduating from Amityville High School in 1971, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Psychology at Adelphi University, showcasing his determination and intellectual prowess. His career in data entry at ADP was marked by unwavering dedication to his work, clients, and colleagues.
A lover of music, Richard played various instruments, with drums holding a special place in his heart. Despite his blindness, he mastered music by ear, becoming not just a great blind musician but a great musician, period. His diverse repertoire ranged from rock to country, and he was especially cherished for playing his ukulele and singing the Happy Birthday song when it was someone's special day, a memory fondly cherished by friends and family.
When not immersed in music, Richard's heart belonged to the NY Mets. Rarely missing a game, he endured the exhilarating highs and the all too often lows alongside his brother, Ronald. Richard's infectious laughter, meticulous attention to detail, and remarkable ability to forge connections endeared him to all who crossed his path. Furthermore, his dedication to the community shone through his active participation in the Lion's Club, as well as his engagement in various local events such as beeper ball, square dancing, and other community-centric activities.
Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Roselle Shapland, and sister Denise Fialkowski, Richard's memory lives on through his loving family. Survived by siblings Darlene Orf and husband Bob, Donna Dillon and husband Mike, Debra McElroy and husband Jack, and Ron Shapland and wife, Barbara and brother-in-law Robert Fialkowski.
