There are some souls that one encounters in life that so quickly - and yet indelibly - make us better by their radiant goodness.
I am one of those touched.
I worked for a brief year or so with Brian at Merrick Bank. Although he was immensely competent, professional and incredibly dedicated. I remember him as as understated. Never a sharp word, never judgmental, always welcoming - not of just to a few...but all.
Now, fifteen years later I share the sadness of his passing too soon. But the regret is surpassed by my gratitude and memories of the example he set without effort that, I know, has made so many of us a bit more tolerant and kind. Better people.
Thank you my friend for the life so well lived.

I worked with Brian many years ago at Citicorp Retail Services. I considered Brian a good friend back then. There was a group of us that clicked and hung out at work & after work, we all had so much fun. I remember he called us Corpies. Brian was a great guy back then & from reading tributes, I see that he still was a great guy. My prayers & condolences go out to his family and friends. R.I.P my old friend ❤️

Brian was more than a friend and coworker. He was a mentor. I’ll miss our arguments about the Islanders and Rangers, but even more, I’ll miss his constant and unwavering support. At the Bank, he was everyone’s number one fan. He truly loved his coworkers and was a pillar of guidance, kindness, and encouragement. He made everyone around him a better person. We’ll all miss you, B-man.

My deepest condolences to Brian's family and all that knew him.
I've had the privilege of working with Brian over the last several years as a bank partner. Brian and I are in similar roles and would share stories about different fraud cases we had encountered. He was always available to give advice or share similar experiences, though most calls would end up with us talking sports. He was a very kind person and he will be missed by many.

When we were young, we lived next door to the Haydens, until we moved to AZ..
I was a teenager..Our dog, would play with their dog Marty, through the back yard adjoining fence..Although I hadn't kept in touch with all my friends from Chestnut Street, the Memories are etched in my mind and heart forever..We would be playing video games in their basement, playing roller hockey in the street, or riding our bikes everywhere..Amongst many others, I remember Brian singing a song that had come out, standing there in his roller skates with his hockey stick..Still to this day, when I hear that song, I think of him..
Love And Prayers are with all His Family And Friends..Wish I could be there..
Thank you for all the Great Childhood Memories Neighbor..Rest In Peace Brian...

Brian is truly a warrior battling this terrible illness so relentlessly and courageously for such a long period of time. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, helpful, and caring person. I was privileged and blessed to have worked with him at Merrick Bank for eight and a half years. His positive attitude, knowledge, dedication, and work ethic was extraordinary. I already miss my brother and friend so dearly, but the legacy he has left behind will truly survive as he touched so many lives so positively. Brian will forever be in our hearts. We only say goodbye, for now, and will carry on his influence for the rest of our lives on this earth. We shall meet again, my brother. Rest in peace.
My deepest condolences to Brian’s family and friends.

It’s difficult to find the words to capture the true essence of what Brian meant to me. For 26 years, I had the privilege of calling Brian both a colleague and a friend. Over those years, through countless shared experiences, challenges, and triumphs, one thing remained constant; Brian's unwavering goodness.
He was the kind of person who was always there; not just when it was convenient, but when it really mattered. During some of the most difficult times in my life, he showed up. Not with grand gestures, but with quiet strength, a listening ear, and a reassuring presence. That kind of friendship is a rare gift. Brian was, at his core, a genuinely good person; the kind of good that doesn’t need to announce onself. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. EVER. Instead, he carried a natural empathy that made people feel seen, supported, and safe. If he sensed someone was struggling, he didn’t wait to be asked, he simply reached out and offered whatever help he could.
Professionally, Brian was exceptional. His knowledge was deep, his dedication unmatched, and his work ethic truly unparalleled. He set a standard that quietly raised the bar for everyone around him, not through competition, but through consistency and integrity. Even as he faced the greatest personal challenge, his battle with cancer, he continued to show up. He worked with the same care and commitment as always, never letting his illness define him or limit what he gave to those around him.
To say I’ll miss him is an understatement. He will be remembered for his kindness, his strength, his generosity, and the quiet but powerful way he impacted the lives of everyone lucky enough to know him.
My deepest sympathies to Brian's family and friends.
Lisa (Kenney) Candia
He was a rare kind of person — the kind you never forget. And I am forever grateful for the 26 years I got to call him my friend.

I worked with Brian for over 20 years at both First Data & Merrick Bank and I consider myself lucky that he was not just a co-worker, he was also my friend. Time spent with him at happy hours, discussing the Islanders and joking around in each other’s offices are among my favorite memories of him.
He will be missed.
My deepest sympathy,
Brian Smith
